Choose purpose before placement
A credit line, draft label, and deterrent mark need different prominence. A small corner credit protects composition, while a proof mark may need stronger central placement.
Balance contrast and opacity
A watermark that disappears over half the image is not useful. Test it over the actual background and at the size where people will view the result, not only while zoomed in.
Keep the unmarked original
Watermarking changes visible pixels. Save the result as a new file and keep the original for future crops, prints, and alternate placements.
