Transparency must become a color
A transparent PNG does not contain a visible checkerboard. That pattern belongs to the editor. JPEG needs a real color behind every pixel, so choose white or another destination-appropriate background.
Know which PNGs benefit
Photographic PNG files can become much smaller as JPEG. Logos, screenshots, and diagrams may develop ringing around edges, so compare them carefully or choose lossless WebP instead.
Keep one clean source
JPEG re-encoding is lossy. Keep the original PNG for later editing and make a JPEG copy for the app or form that requires it.
